MAASAI WEDDINGS

The Maasai offer the opportunity to round off your wedding or renew your vows in a traditional ceremony in the middle of the golden African savannah – a special experience that is colourful, energizing, filled with love and very romantic!

During this traditional ceremony, the men then dress the groom in a beautiful Maasai shuka (a brightly coloured blanket), a cloak made from calfskin, and two ceremonial beaded sticks – a white one to symbolize wealth and a black one to symbolize peace. The bride is taken care of by the women, and adorned with a beaded dress, a traditional wedding necklace, and lots of bracelets. Multiple headdresses are then generously placed on top of her head by the Maasai mamas, as there is no such thing as over-accessorizing in Maasai land!

When both are dressed, the Maasai women lead the bride with songs and dances to a wedding boma. A group of warriors escort the groom to meet the bride, after which they receive a Maasai blessing from an elder of the community, followed by an answer from the bride, groom, and wedding party in unison: NAAI – Oh God. Closing off, the couple is tied together in another shuka and welcomed as a married couple into the community.

Celebrations proceed with eating goat meat and singing and dancing with the Maasai warriors and women, after which traditional wedding gifts like African fabrics and a beaded gourd are presented. The ceremony ends with a romantic dinner (for two!) under the African stars.
